Herndon house fire near Runnymede Park

From the Fairfax County Fire Department:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Saturday, May 04, 2013, at approximately 10:35 p.m., in the Herndon area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located 412 Queens Row Street.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof and attic of the two-story home upon arrival. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. Two adults and three children were home when the fire broke out and self evacuated. A total of five occupants have been displaced. Red Cross is supporting the occupants.

One firefighter sustained non life threating injuries and was transported to a local hospital, treated and released.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. The fire originated on the front porch with combustibles too close to a heat source.

Sixty firefighters needed to put out Oakton house fire, but house is still a total loss.

Two people were injured in this incident near Oak Hill by Fox Mill Road and Vale Road. The house is a total loss. From Fairfax County fire department:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Monday, April 22, 2013, at approximately 2:05 p.m., in the Oakton area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located 11442 Vale Spring Drive.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof and attic of the two-story home upon arrival. Due to the roof being fully involved with fire and quickly extending throughout the home, firefighters used several additional hose lines to protect the detached garage and to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes and close-in power lines. The incident commander called for a second alarm bringing approximately 60 firefighters to the scene. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 45 minutes. Crews established a continuous water supply using five fire engines in tandem to connect to the nearest hydrant. Two occupants were home when the fire broke out and escaped. A total of seven occupants have been displaced. Red Cross is supporting the occupants. Two occupants were transported to Fair Oaks Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The home is a total loss.

The fire is under investigation.

Body at scene of grass fire identified

The Chantilly Patch has the scoop (via Fairfax County police) on the unidentified man found Sunday near a grass fire at the intersection of the Fairfax County Parkway and Lee Jackson Highway:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue announced Wednesday that they have identified the body of the man firefighters found Sunday in Chantilly as Handel Victor Stephens-Dowd.

Stephens-Dowd was 24 years old and lived on Leafcrest Lane in Fairfax, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause or manner of death, according to the news release. Fire investigators and police continue the investigation.

Body found at site of grass fire at Fairfax County Parkway and Route 50

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to an outside fire, Sunday, April 7, 2013, at approximately 12:05 p.m. at Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway, and the Fairfax County Parkway, in the Fair Oaks area of Fairfax County. While fighting the fire, firefighters discovered the body of an unidentified adult male.

Firefighters encountered grass, brush, and several trees on fire near the east bound ramp of Lee-Jackson Highway to the Fairfax County Parkway upon arrival. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. After fire extinguishment, firefighters found a body in the area of the fire.

Fire investigators and police are jointly investigating the incident.

The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death following an autopsy.

Saturday fire causes $165,000 in damages to Oak Hill home

Armada Drive is in the Fox Mill neighborhood off Pinecrest Drive. From the Fairfax County Fire Department:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Saturday, March 23, 2013, at approximately 11:25 p.m., in the Herndon area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located at 2616 Armada Street.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the outside rear of the split-level home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive exterior fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. The occupants were home when the fire broke out and escaped unharmed. The home had working smoke alarms. Two adults and several pets have been displaced. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupants. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $165,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. An outside energized lighting circuit caused the fire.

House fire in Reston on Midsummer Drive

Midsummer Drive is near Sunrise Valley Elementary School. From the Fairfax County Fire Department:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Thursday, March 21, 2013, at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the Reston area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located at 10736 Midsummer Drive.

Firefighters reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the attic and roof of ranch style home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure all hidden fire hot spots within the attic were extinguished. Sounding smoke alarms activated and provided early warning for both of the occupants, who escaped unharmed. Both occupants have been displaced. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupants. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $110,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A drop light in the attic too close to combustibles caused the fire.

Reston townhouse chimney fire creates $125,000 in damages

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire, Thursday, March 14, 2013, at approximately 8 p.m. in the Reston area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located at 11977 Greywing Court.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the middle three-story townhouse upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive interior fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 10 minutes. No one was home when the fire broke out. The fire was contained to the single townhouse. One adult male has been displaced. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupant. Smoke alarms were present; however, were non-working. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $125,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A gas leak within the gas operated chimney ignited by the pilot light caused the fire.

Reston apartment homicide victim identified

Follow up from this sad story about an apartment fire early yesterday in Reston. From Fairfax County police:

The deceased woman has been identified as Jennifer Lynne Pearson, 38, of 12002 Waterside View Drive #22 in Reston. She was pregnant at the time of her death.

Let’s hope her killer is soon caught.

“Apparent” homicide in Reston apartment fire

A woman who died in an apartment building fire in Reston Monday morning may have been the victim of homicide, police say.

The fire broke out around 6:20 a.m. at a building in the 12000 block of Waterside View Drive, just off Fairfax County Parkway. The majority of the blaze was contained to an apartment on the second floor, a spokesperson said.

Update @ 6:18 PM from Fairfax County police:

Police are investigating an apparent homicide that occurred in the Reston area on Monday, February 18. Around 6:12 a.m. the Fairfax County Fire Department was called to an apartment in the 12000 block of Waterside View Drive for a report of smoke. Firefighters determined the smoke was coming from inside an apartment on the second floor and forced entry. They found an adult female deceased inside the apartment.

Police detectives and the Office of the Fire Marshal are investigating the woman’s death jointly. The investigation is in its early stages but detectives have determined the victim had trauma to her upper body. She has not yet been identified.

Fireplace Ashes Cause Herndon House Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Thursday, January 24, 2013, at approximately 9:55 a.m., in the Herndon area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located at 908 Young Dairy Court.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from the garage and roof of the two-story home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. Firefighters also encountered arcing power lines while fighting the fire. Three occupants were home when the fire broke out and escaped unharmed. Sounding smoke alarms provided early warning for the occupants. Four occupants have been displaced. Red Cross support is being provided to the four displaced occupants. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $120,000.

According to investigators, the fire was accidental. Improper disposal of fireplace ashes in the garage placed near combustibles caused the fire.
