How did Oak Hill vote in the 2012 election?

For fun, we ran the number of votes for the precincts that make up Oak Hill in Tuesdays elections. Just how blue or red is Oak Hill?

It depends on your precinct. The numbers are not precise because Oak Hill is zip code 20171 and some precincts bleed into other zip codes. For example, Dogwood precinct is in both Oak Hill and Reston. Still, it gives you a good idea of Oak Hill’s overall demographics.

Overall, Oak Hill voted 61% for Obama, and 38% for Romney, making it a “blue” (Democratic) area overall.

Voter participation in Oak Hill averaged 80%. This makes us a very engaged voter population.

Awards for most engaged precinct: Kinross East, at 83.8% voter turnout. They also win for “reddest” (most Republican) precinct. But even there Obama won the majority of votes cast (51.44%).

Most Democratic precinct: Dogwood (70.02% Obama).

In general the further south and east you go from Oak Hill, the more conservative your neighbors are likely to be. But Oak Hill is clearly Democratic overall.

Results are unofficial and based on this document.

Want to vote? October 15th is your deadline to register

Want to be heard in the upcoming election but are not registered to vote? In that case you have until Monday to register. The good news is that Fairfax County is holding special hours tomorrow (Saturday) for last minute registrations.

The Fairfax County Office of Elections is open Saturday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at the Government Center, Suite 323.

Are you registered to vote? Are you sure?

You must update your voter registration if you have changed your address or name, or you may not be able to vote. Every registered voter in Virginia is receiving a new voter registration card this fall. Make sure you read it and note the location of your polling place, which may have changed due to redistricting.

There are a number of convenient ways to check your voter registration status:

Oak Hill voters decide to mostly stay home

Primaries rarely turn out the voters to the same degree as general elections, particularly presidential elections. Even so, the results of voting in Oak Hill mirrored voting results across Virginia. For whatever reasons, Republicans mostly stayed home instead of voting in Tuesday’s primary. Reasons may have included a choice of only two candidates that qualified (Mitt Romney and Ron Paul) or Republicans simply feeling uninspired by their choices.

Only 264,247 Republicans across Virginia bothered to vote on Tuesday. There are 5,153,482 registered voters in Virginia, making the state turnout rate 5.153%. Considering that Virginia voters do not register by political party, presumably the percentage of Republicans would be higher, assuming a third of registered voters consider themselves Republican.

How did Fairfax County compare with the state? 39,384 of 703,757 total voters voted, a turnout rate of 5.596%.
