Chantilly teacher relates quake experience at epicenter

The August 23 earthquake made quite a shake locally, registering at 5.8 on the Richter scale. A Chantilly teacher happened to be at the quake epicenter when the quake occurred, and provided her experience on the Chantilly Patch web site.

“It was pretty intense,” she said.

“I was walking up a hill, and it was like the ground was rolling. I had to struggle to keep my balance. It sounded like rolling thunder,” Prescop said. “It was very loud. The power plant is just around the corner from me so I thought maybe something was wrong with that.”

Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes Oak Hill and is captured in video

The magnitude 5.8 earthquake experienced yesterday was the most powerful earthquake in our region since 1944. Fortunately it caused very little damage, although some places of business closed. Northern Virginia Community College closed its campuses for the day.

How did it shake here in Oak Hill? A video being filmed locally in Chantilly, Virginia at G&C Tire and Auto in Chantilly captures the earthquake.
