Don’t miss today’s fascinating article in the Washington Post about the history of Reston. Actually it’s about its prehistory as the failed town of Wiehle. Wiehle would be Dr. Max Wiehle, who bought 6750 acres in what is now north Reston in 1886 for the princely sum of $22,000. Little remains of the old town of Wiehle but one house visible from Old Reston Avenue near Sunrise Valley Drive. It would take Reston founder Robert E. Simon to turn the vision into a reality, starting with the planned community of Lake Anne in 1964. Most people are familiar not with the name of Wiehle, but Wiehle Avenue and the metro station that will bear his name now under construction near the avenue.
