Musicians Katy Benko and Julie Crosson will perform at Frying Pan Farm Park’s Raise the Rafters winter music series. The series will examine the history of music from the birth of rock and roll, through it’s impact on social change and covering the impact women have had on the genre.

The first installment took place Jan. 15, which covered the origin of rock. On Sunday, Feb. 19 the duo will explore the social and political change that rock music inspired and that was inspired by it.

The final performance, on Sunday, March 18 will examine the role of women and how they made a big impact in musical culture, even from its earliest day.

A 69-year-old Mineral man was killed when he stepped into the street in an attempt to help a tractor-trailer backing out of a parking lot, and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Police responded to the crash in the 2500 block of Fox Mill Road on Wednesday, February 1 shortly after 11:30 a.m. The pedestrian, Basil Knick, was flown by helicopter to a local hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The striking vehicle, a 2004 Saturn Vue, driven by 59-year-old Darryl Barnes of Sterling, was travelling westbound on Fox Mill Road prior to the crash. Barnes apparently did not see Knick in the roadway. He remained on the scene after the crash, and was charged with failing to pay full time and attention.

Crash reconstruction detectives continue to investigate the crash.

Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in this crash.

Vandals attacked the construction site of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Mosque in Chantilly overnight Jan. 29, authorities said.

All of the first-level windows and door glass were shattered by thrown rocks, causing about $60,000 in damages, according to Usman Ghumman, general secretary. He said the artisan doors and windows were custom-made to match the mosque’s design and artifacts.

Fairfax County police found the significant damage to the unfinished mosque the next morning, but said there is no evidence that the vandals entered the building. Empty beer cans, liquor bottles and rocks were also found scattered on the ground and on the roof of the building.

“If one or two windows were broken, we would have thought it was a random act of vandalism, but all fingers are pointing toward being a hate crime,” Ghumman said.

Police are investigating an abduction and attempted sexual assault that occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 29. A 37-year-old woman was grabbed by a man as she walked toward her home in the 4100 block of Elmwood Street. The suspect displayed a weapon, moved the victim a short distance and attempted to sexually assault her. The suspect fled on foot. The victim did not require medical attention.

The suspect was described as being white and tall, with a medium build. He was wearing a dark colored jacket, dark colored pants, and he concealed his face from the victim.

A 29-year-old clerk was robbed by two masked men at the International Gift Store, 14513 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway on Sunday, January 29.

Two men entered the business around 6:30 p.m., produced a knife and demanded money. The clerk complied and was not injured. The suspects escaped with jewelry, electronics and cash.

The suspects were described as white men, around 20 years old. Both had black hair, were around 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed around 140 pounds.

The Girl Scouts of the USA organization continues to attract critics for straying from its roots in a more secular and non-traditional direction. The most recent offense of this nature has prompted St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Chantilly, Virginia (left) to ban the organization from meeting on its grounds because of its alleged connections to Planned Parenthood.

The church has barred Girl Scout troops from meeting in both the church and its school; furthermore, the girls are no longer permitted to wear their uniforms on church premises.

The church is located on Poplar Tree Road in Chantilly.

On Thursday, Jan. 26, at approximately 7am, a Southwest Employee was involved in a collision between a baggage cart and a mobile lounge at Washington Dulles Airport. Immediately following the accident, the injured Employee was rushed to an area hospital to receive medical attention. We learned earlier today, Friday, Jan. 27, that the Employee passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. We continue to work with all relevant agencies, including the local authorities and the airport, to investigate events surrounding the accident. The Southwest Airlines Family is greatly saddened by the passing of our Southwest Family Member, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and support to his entire family at this time.

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will host its Jan. 29 low-cost rabies clinic at the Sully District Governmental Center.

The cost for rabies shots at the clinic is $12.00 per dog, cat or ferret. All pets will receive a one-year rabies vaccine. To obtain a three-year vaccine, citizens must bring their pet’s rabies certificate showing the animal’s current rabies vaccination and vaccination expiration date. Rabies certificates will be issued, no tags. All dogs should be on leashes and all cats and ferrets should be in carriers.

Fairfax County 2012 dog licenses will be sold separately at the clinic and cost $10.00 per dog.

Cash or checks only will be accepted at the clinic. No credit cards.

The clinic is a partnership with the office of Fairfax County Board Supervisor Michael R. Frey and is being hosted by the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and Deepwood Veterinary Hospital.

The good news is that based on my monitoring Oak Hill is truly one of the safest communities you can possibly live in. Even minor vandalism rarely occurs. Southern parts of Oak Hill fall under the Fair Oaks police station, which rarely has any events of note. Many weeks pass with no major incidents reported. Northern parts fall under Reston where the same is true. Herndon has its own police department of course, because it is a town, but I try to confine relevant news to Oak Hill if possible, or on its immediate edges otherwise since many Oak Hill communities touch these neighborhoods.

Community associations are also often silent during the winter, or have content behind firewalls, indicating not much is happening as well. There are events at Frying Pan Park, which I check for and post periodically. Most church and school web sites are also scanned, but only rarely have events of interest to the community.

So if things are happening, one of the best ways to get the news out is to send me an email. I have owned the domain since 2000, and still feel a community web site has potential. It needs your input. So if you are a newshound and have appropriate news articles to post, they can be posted through me or, if you are trusted, I can set up an account and allow you to submit them yourself.

Posts are relatively infrequent, in part because there is not much publicly accessible content for Oak Hill, but also because I try to keep a tight community focus.
