It’s not every day a new station, or a new line starts on Metrorail. The first passenger train left the Reston/Wiehle Avenue station at noon today. If you were not on that train, here’s a short video that captures those first moments.
See the news release:
Connector bus passengers should be advised that current Fairfax Connector bus routes taking North County riders to West Falls Church Metro Station on the Orange Line will now terminate at the new Wiehle-Reston East station. The resources saved from traveling up and down the Dulles Toll Road will be reallocated back into the system, allowing greater service frequency and increased midday, evening and weekend service.
Connector passengers who are currently parking at the Sunset Hills Interim Park and Ride lot should be advised that the lot closes permanently at midnight, July 25. The 600-space lot, located at the intersection of Sunset Hills Road and Town Center Parkway, offered temporary parking while the Wiehle station was under construction. From our fire department. This is not in Oak Hill, but the Town of Herndon:

The fire started in the kitchen/dining area and is under investigation.
Well, it’s about time:
Phase I of the Silver Line will open on Saturday July 26, Metro’s general manager announced Monday.
Richard Sarles said on a conference call that the long-awaited start date has been a target for a while. He said he felt confident Monday to set that as a firm date.
“The five new Silver Line stations will open to customers at noon, and the first Silver Line train will depart Wiehle-Reston East, bound for Largo Town Center, at that time,” said Sarles.

Reston Association’s Design Review Board on Tuesday unanimously denied the proposal for a 115-foot cell phone tower in Hunters Woods Park.
The tower would have been the first such structure on RA land, though there have been requests to do so before. One of those requests was dropped by the carrier; the other was also denied by the DRB.
Reston-based Milestone Communications and AT&T sought to install a monopole in the wooded area behind the soccer field at the park off of Reston Parkway. The equipment would be located in a fenced-in area of the park.
Due to sudden rains, Route 50 Eastbound is blocked, and depending upon weather conditions, may continue to be blocked throughout the afternoon hours. Traffic is being re-routed through the Fair Oaks Mall lots. Please make travel plans and detours accordingly.
