Winners of the Oak Hill Howlin’ and Prowlin’ 5K Run announced

The winners and statistics on all the runners who participated in Saturday’s Oak Hill Howlin’ and Prowlin’ 5K run have been posted. There were 155 female and 147 male runners in the contest.

Learn about Battle of Chantilly/Ox Hill at Sully Plaza on May 8th

You don’t have to be a Civil War buff to be curious about the Battle of Chantilly (as called by the Union)/Ox Hill (as called by the Confederacy), the closest Civil War battle that occurred to Oak Hill.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the battle, which is largely lost to history. The battle occurred after the Second Battle of Manassas during a driving thunderstorm on September 2, 1862. Unfortunately, the battle has been largely paved over with the development of housing and shopping near Fair Oaks Mall and the Fairfax County Parkway. There were hundreds of Union and Confederate casualties as a result of this battle. About the only evidence of it is a small historic site on Monument Drive. In fact, Monument Drive was named to mark the monument site and the Battle of Chantilly/Ox Hill.

Local historian David Welker will review the battle, which is documented in his book, on Tuesday, May 8th at 7 PM at the Sully Plantation Historic Site off Sully Road (Route 28). Watch sheep shearing and antique farm equipment demonstrations. Participate in hands-on farm activities such as cow and goat milking. Enjoy crafts, games, puppet shows, and get an up-close introduction to the baby farm animals. Walk-ins welcome. $6 at the door.

The space shuttle Discovery landed at Washington Dulles International Airport this morning, it’s destination being the Udvar-Hazy Center. It was easy to spot from Rachel Carson Middle School in Oak Hill as it made it’s approach. Picture courtesy of the Fairfax County Public Schools.

The space shuttle Discovery may have flown its last mission in space, but it has one last flight: from the Kennedy Space Center to its new home at the Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington-Dulles International Airport. The existing shuttle Enterprise, which never flew in space, will get a new home. Here is a video showing preparations to move the shuttle underway at Cape Canaveral.

No point in traveling far to taste great wines when you can get your taste of over two hundred wines later this month at the Great Grapes Festival in Reston. The event will be held at the Town Center:

Two days worth of food, art and wine celebrations are in store for the Reston Great Grapes Festival, set for Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29 at the Reston Town Center (11900 Market St., Reston, Va.).

You’ll need to bring a lawn chair and blanket to rest from the massive selections of wine that will be unleashed at this festival. Choose your samples from more than 200 wines, visit with reps from 20+ Virginia wineries on site, and take part in the hands-on cooking demos taught by culinary experts such as Chef Bo Palker of Vinifera Restaurant and celebrity chef Maria Liberati.
