The Dogwood area of Reston near Dogwood Elementary is known to have problems with crime. There also appears to be a gang problem in the community. From Fairfax County Police logs:

SIMPLE ASSAULT/ GANG PARTICIPATION/ ARREST: Officers were called to the 12200 block of Laurel Glade Court around 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, November 12 for a weapons complaint. An investigation determined that a 36-year-old man was robbed of his wallet by a group of several males. Another group of three males witnessed the robbery and ran after the suspects to retrieve the victim’s wallet. There was an altercation between the two groups pertaining to different street gangs. The 18-year-old male who ran after the suspects was then assaulted. Juwan K. Burton, 18, of 12244 Laurel Glade Court #201 and Dwann S. Roberts, 18, of 15400 Mendoza Lane #401 in Woodbridge were arrested and charged with simple assault and gang participation.
