Supervisor Catherine Hudgins, whose district includes Reston and parts of Herndon and Oak Hill has been named president of the Virginia Association of Counties.
Fairfax County Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins (Hunter Mill District) was elected as 2011-12 President of the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) by its membership during its 77th Annual Conference in Bath County. Hudgins and other newly elected officers – including Supervisor Penelope A. Gross (Mason District), named as secretary-treasurer on VACo’s Board Executive Committee, and Supervisor Linda Q. Smyth (Providence District), who serves as a VACo Board member for 2011-2012 – started their terms at the association’s Annual Business Meeting on Nov. 15.
“I am truly honored to be elected as your president,” Hudgins said during her acceptance speech before the VACo Board. “I am pleased to serve an organization that brings together the ideas of many to make each of our counties the best they can be.”
VACo, which is governed by a board of directors made up of local government officials, supports county officials and works to represent, promote and protect the interests of counties to better serve the people of Virginia. The group represents local governments at the state and national levels in legislative and regulatory processes, while also serving as a valuable resource network for planning and implementing new ideas and technologies
“Cathy is a cerebral leader, and in this time of uncertainty, her style will serve our membership well,” VACo Executive Director James D. Campbell said. “Even though Cathy represents a large county, she has always been aware of the needs of every county…VACo is fortunate to have Cathy Hudgins as its president.”
Hudgins succeeds Wise County Supervisor Robert R. Adkins and becomes the eighth VACO president to hail from Fairfax County. Former presidents from the county include Gerald E. Connolly (2005), Gerald W. Hyland (2002), Katherine K. Hanley (1996), Martha V. Pennino (1989), James M. Scott (1979), Stuart T. DeBell (1964) and G. Wallace Carper (1952).
