Drug Education presentation at Oakton HS on April 6th

Parents are invited to attend a presentation by Alcohol and Drug Services at Oakton High School on April 6th at 7:00 PM.

Oakton High School is located at 2900 Sutton Road in Vienna.  For your convenience use the front door or door 14 to enter the school. The program will be held in the cafeteria.

This presentation will cover the latest trends, indicators of use, prevention skills to keep our children off drugs and a demonstration of drug paraphernalia, how it is used and how they are made. Please join us to learn from our local law enforcement and Alcohol and Drug Service representatives.

Herndon man arrested for marijuana possession with intention to distribute in Centreville

From Fairfax County police logs:

POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA WITH THE INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE/ARREST: An
officer was patrolling behind the Fast Eddie’s restaurant and bar, located at 14114 Lee Highway,
and observed a vehicle with three men inside around 10:12 p.m. on Thursday, March 17. An
investigation determined one of the men, Francis K. Kenney, 25, of 916 Barker Hill Road in
Herndon, allegedly was in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and charged with possession
of marijuana with the intent to distribute. The other men were released.

Assault on Freetown Court in Reston

From Fairfax County Police Logs:

Police responded to the 2300 block of Freetown Court for a report of a man who cut himself with a knife. They located him and as they attempted to take him into custody, he allegedly assaulted an officer. Jose M. Alvarez Reyes, 29, of 2320 Freetown Court #21C in Reston, was arrested and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer. The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of his self-inflicted wound to the upper body. The officer did not require medical attention.

An information meeting will be held for parents of this fall’s incoming kindergarten students on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

We are sure you have many questions about the kindergarten year and your child’s enrollment.  We will try to answer all of your questions at this time.  Registration packets will be available for pick up at the meeting.  You may register your child at any time, but It is recommended that you please call ahead to (703) 262-2700 to make sure our registrar, Barbara Mehm, is available to handle your paperwork.

Fairfax County to assist earthquake rescue in Japan

Today’s magnitude 8.9 earthquake in Japan is causing Fairfax County to mobilize a response to help assist.

Virginia Task Force 1 (VATF-1), Fairfax County’s urban search and rescue team was mobilized by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Friday, March 11, 2011, with potential to deploy to Japan to assist in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that struck early this morning.

A heavy task force is comprised of 72 personnel, search and rescue canines, physicians, paramedics, structural engineers, technical search and rescue specialists, and other support personnel have started to mobilize.

The team was last activated in January of 2010 following the devastating earthquake near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. VATF-1 has deployed overseas to both natural and man-made disasters for 25 years, including Kenya, Taiwan, Armenia, and Turkey.

Additionally, as a part of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, the team maintains constant operational readiness, and is a local resource for the residents of Fairfax County.
